Competition & Performance Music

Music Guidelines for Cheerleading & Dance Teams

In preparation for attending a Varsity Spirit Event, please click HERE to view the Music Guidelines.

Music Provider Directory

Click here to find the most current directory of music providers. This list will be updated as new providers are identified.

The use of any popular or third party recordings without licenses from the owners of the recordings and the owners of all the publishing rights, regardless of who sells that music, is prohibited.

If your organization is interested in being considered as a resource for approved music, please contact USA Cheer at

Proof of Licensing

Teams must be able to provide proof of licensing, in the form of a printed copy, during registration at the event they are attending. This may include:

  1. Proof of purchase from a music provider. (Please check the Music Provider Directory for updates.)
  2. If using a single song, receipt from purchase of single song.
  3. If using an editor, the editor does not have to be from the Music Provider Directory; however, they must be able to provide you with proof of purchase from a provider from the Music Provider Directory and proof of licensing for all sound effects and voiceovers included in the mix.
  4. If using a non-commercial music provider, documentation that assigns all applicable rights to the team.

If a team does not have the required paperwork, they will be given the option to count the routine verbally or perform to an approved track of music or a track with counts (provided by Varsity Spirit).

If a team does not have the required paperwork and chooses not to count the routine verbally or perform to the approved track of music or a track with counts, the team will be disqualified from the competition and not be allowed to perform.

Music Challenges

If there are concerns regarding a team’s use of music, a Challenge Form must be completed immediately following the team’s performance.

A challenge can only be made by the official coach, advisor, director or gym owner of a team competing at the event at which the challenge is being made.

Challenge process:

  • All music challenges must be submitted in writing to the event director immediately following the team’s performance.
  • There will be a $100 fee to request a music challenge, which must be in the form of a check made payable to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
  • Challenges will be reviewed and finalized within 48 hours of the event.
  • If the challenge is correct, fees collected will be voided. If the challenge is incorrect, fees will be donated to St. Jude.

Band Music

If you are attending a camp or competition and would like to perform your school’s original fight song, you may bring a recording of your marching band playing that song. You will need to get the school’s permission to use the song and recording. A letter granting permission for the cheer or dance team to use the fight song on school letterhead is sufficient. It should be signed by the principal or other school official.

If you’d like to perform to a recording of your band playing a single musical composition, you will need to provide documentation that confirms the following:

  • The team has secured a compulsory license to make copies of the recording made by the band or orchestra
  • The band or orchestra recorded the song for and in conjunction with the cheer/dance squad
  • The school principal or dean was aware of and approved this recording
  • The band or orchestra does not provide music to other cheer/dance squads
  • No other musical compositions are embodied in the recording to be used by the authorized cheer/dance squad

If you need another option to find marching band music, you can use a legally acquired recording of a band playing a recording from an authorized provider (iTunes, Amazon, etc.). Like the single song option, this can be used as long as no edits are made to the music (other than for timing purposes).

Additional Information

Each team will be required to sign that they have read and understand the new music guidelines. This can be found in the Policies and Procedures document from each competition you are attending.

If you have additional questions, teams should email
