Mother Daughter Coaching Duo: Southwestern HS

There’s no bond like a mother and daughter bond, and what’s even more special is seeing a relationship grow through common interest! In honor of Mother’s Day, we’ve caught up with top mother daughter coaching duos across the country to hear about their mutual love for cheerleading and dance!

Britani and Sheryl Shoemaker are a power team who coach Southwestern High School! They’ve been coaching together for 12 years! Britani has never coached without her mom by her side. We caught up with the mother daughter warrior duo to hear more about their cheerleading history together!

What was your cheerleading history before you started coaching together?

S: I was just one of the cheer moms supporting Britani in middle school and high school cheer. Going to every game, competition and any other cheer event

B: Before we started coaching together, I cheered at Southwestern High School and my mom was “just” a cheer mom!  When the coaching position came available, I was attending the University of Kentucky and wanted to coach at SWHS more than anything!  But I couldn’t take the job on by myself living an hour and a half away, so my mom stepped up and volunteered to do it!

What does coaching with your mom/daughter mean to you?

S: It has been a very special time for me. It has really brought us closer together and working along beside her helping her to live out a dream has really been a blessing to me!

B: Coaching with my mom has been one of the biggest blessings of my life! It has meant so much to me over the years to know that her involvement as a coach started so that I could have a chance to live out my dream. It has definitely brought us closer. She sees the best in me always has my back no matter what!  Together we’ve accomplished things beyond my wildest dreams!  I definitely couldn’t have done any of it without her!

What is your favorite memory with your mom/daughter?

S: Winning nationals for the first time in 2013 and being a part of the movie “The American Cheerleader”

B: Winning nationals in 2013 for the first time!  We heard our name called and all I can remember is hugging my mom and hearing her say “You did it Britani!  We did it!”
