Finals for Super Varsity Division I wrapped up this past Sunday with nine teams competing for the title at the 2018 UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida.

Reigning champion Houston High School out of Germantown, Tennessee, added another trophy to its case this year as the team took back-to-back wins in the division!

Houston coach Ryan Jackson said the squad was READY before taking the Finals mat.

“After a pretty hard warmup, they seemed to be a little shaken, but the competitive side in them came out and it quickly turned from nerves to pure adrenaline!” Jackson said. “To be honest, that is one of the best parts about coaching this team."

"They don’t dwell on the bad. They step back, get calm, cool, and collected. Then just build off that.”

The Mustang's routine was jam-packed with incredible tumbling, picture-perfect pyramids, and solid group stunts. The team left it all out on the floor and hit a clean routine, sending it to the top as national champion! Before taking the mat, Jackson had some motivating words for the team.

“I asked them to find their ‘why,’” Jackson said. “Why did they tryout? Why did they push through the hard times? Why did they stick around when times were tough? And why do they truly want this national championship?

"I followed up with telling them that not only do you need to perform and execute, but you need to take the mat with the thought that you are all in. You worked all year for that moment — so don’t waste it.”
