All About That Base: Jordan Elmore

Basing is like being the superhero of a stunt group that allows you to express your courage, strength and intelligence all at the same time. Knowing that you are the foundation and support for the entire group is such a rewarding and accomplishing feeling, especially when you are overcoming new elite skills.

My name is Jordan Elmore. I am a base at Texas State! My career started as a gymnast at 2 years old, and years later decided I found an interest in competitive cheerleading. I began at a small gym in Houston, knowing absolutely nothing, and still to this day remembering back to my very first summer team practice is honestly a very humbling thought.

That first practice was quite stressful, learning the tips and tricks of cheerleading while trying to be the best that I could be at the same time. Soon after the few practices I had under my belt, basing had become my passion and what I loved most about this extreme sport. After competing with Champion All-Stars out of Houston for a couple of years, I then moved to Texas Lonestar Cheer Co. to cheer competitively as well as joined my high school cheer team for the rest of the four years before I came to college.

Fast-forward to now, I am currently in my senior year at Texas State University and have been with this program for four years. It is extremely bittersweet to think about the memories I have had with this team, these coaches, and the best friends I have met along the way. It was such an honor and unforgettable experience to be a part of this program coming in straight out of high school. I have learned more things than I can even imagine about collegiate level cheerleading and have upped my basing skill level to the best that I believe I can be.

While competing at Texas State, I’ve recognized how important my position is as a main base and side base. I’ve learned to focus in on each skill individually and the importance of hitting it before moving on to the next. It takes a special talent to be able to put nerves and emotions aside when stepping foot on that well-known blue mat, and at those moments is exactly when I knew what I needed to do. Basing is such a special talent, and it takes very talented people to accomplish the role. You are not only focused on your job and your timing with your group but also looking out for the safety of that very talented person you are holding.

Through my long cheerleading career, I can say that I have encountered many opportunities that have led to successful outcomes. Basing has taught me how to be responsible, trustworthy, and respectful of others. I hope that I can be an inspiration to many guys and girls to push themselves and better their stunt groups. Cheerleading has had such a great impact on my life, and I will miss the lifelong relationships, memories, and doing the sport that I love every day.
