Prepping for the Parade

VARSITY ALL-AMERICANS ON PARADE

Have you ever wondered what goes into preparing for a parade performance? Not unlike camp, athletes learn and practice a routine to showcase their skills as they march down busy streets and pathways surrounded by excited spectators. That preparation actually starts months before they catch a flight to one of the U.S.A.’s most beautiful states!

Athletes received a video of their routine back in October so they could begin breaking it down with time to spare. Parade routines consist of strong motions and pom choreography to create eye-catching visuals that surprise and delight the crowd. These routines are carefully prepared by Varsity Spirit staff, especially for the designated special event! The hard work that athletes put into memorizing and perfecting these routines prior to arriving at their event is vital to effortless execution on the day of the parade. Regarding her experience prepping for the parade, Emma of Kingwood High said, “It took a lot of practicing the routine, a lot of making sure everything was in order and a lot of excitement!” Emma has come all the way from Houston, TX and is especially looking forward to visiting the historic site of Pearl Harbor.

After having the opportunity to check in, see the sights and bond with fellow parade participants, athletes meet up with the Varsity Spirit staff for a final rehearsal before the big show. Just like camp, Varsity Spirit staff lead the way by demonstrating the routine on stage as athletes follow along. Motions are polished and ripples are perfected in preparation for the experience of a lifetime. Participants even practice walking in place to mimic the parade route itself. It may not be the real thing, but this experience is necessary to achieve that perfect spacing from start to finish.

When asked what she thought about the parade rehearsal, Tijah of MacArthur High School said, “It’s been really fun and interesting learning how to clean up our motions and get everything perfect.” We’d have to agree and can’t wait to see all their hard work put into action!
