Corner Canyon Wins First National Title

History was made at the 2018 UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship for Corner Canyon High School. After traveling from Draper, Utah, to Orlando, Florida, this past weekend, the team not only made Finals for the first time ever, but it also brought home its first national championship title!

“When second place was announced, they all looked at me in shock," Corner Canyon coach Whitney Lunt said. “We have been telling them that they are good, but I don’t think they truly understood that they could win and it was priceless to see their faces!

“I still don’t believe it’s real! I’m just so proud of them. They have worked so hard and they have been so consistent all year and they deserve it!”

The Chargers set two goals for the championship weekend: The team wanted to hit its routine and make it to Finals. After Corner Canyon hit its routine on Day 1 and advanced straight through to Finals, all of the Chargers' hard work paid off in Orlando.

Corner Canyon High School has only been in existence for five years, and its team has attended UCA Nationals in four of those years. The Chargers' routine opened up with incredible group stunts, followed by five solid cartwheel fulls. Other highlight elements throughout Corner Canyon’s winning routine were its beautiful double-up pull-through libs and eye-catching pyramids.

“We’ve always had really good skills, but we have dropped a lot,” Lunt added. “Our cheer in the past has not been very strong, so our focus this year was to work on hitting and to get that cheer where it needed to be.”
