A Guide For Auditioning Dancers: Video Audition Tips

Dance team auditions are in full swing and this season they look a little different… Most teams are transitioning from in-person auditions to video auditions. This switch can be confusing or uncomfortable, but we are here to help! Here are 5 tips to help you smash your video audition and land a spot on your dream team!

  1. Do Your Research

Research, research, research. Before auditioning for any team, you should research the team and what they are all about. Follow them on Instagram, watch old Nationals videos on YouTube, or find their team page on Facebook.  Does the team perform on the sidelines or in the stands at football games? Do they compete at Nationals? What does their practice schedule look like? What events will you be required to attend? All these questions are great to research before auditioning for a dance team. Knowing what you are getting yourself into will help you find the team that’s a perfect match for you!

  1. Look “Audition” Ready

Dress for success. I REPEAT dress. for. success. Dress as if you were at the regular in-person audition. Have your hair pulled back, wear appropriate dance attire (maybe even the school’s colors!) and throw on a little bit of makeup. Look game day ready! You don’t have to do anything wild to look presentable. Show the judges that you take this audition seriously and you are READY to make the team.

  1. Follow Directions

Before filming, make sure you know all the items the coach wants you to include in your video audition. You most likely have been sent a tryout packet with this information. Read the requirements all the way through (maybe even twice) and double, triple check before submitting your video that you completed everything on the list.

  1. Introduce Yourself

The beginning of a video audition can we awkward. Start the video off with a brief introduction to break the ice. Let the judges know your name, where you are from, and what team you are auditioning for. Speak clear and confidently! Don’t forget to SMILE! Let your personality shine through and give the judges an opportunity to learn a little bit about you.

  1. Pick Your Space

Find a well-lit space, with enough room to perform each exercise to the best of your ability. Make sure whatever device you are filming on, is set up properly and the sound is ON. If you are filming at home, find a quiet space where family and friends aren’t walking back and forth in the background. You do not want anything distracting your judges while watching your video. All eyes should be on YOU!

Once you submit your audition video,  BREATHE! Let the dance gods work their magic. Every dancer provides a unique asset to every team and you will find the team that is a perfect fit for you! Good luck, have fun, and enjoy the process!
