“Ski-u-mah!” a traditional cheer meaning “victory” has been a part of the University of Minnesota’s school spirit since the 1800s. And this cheer isn’t the only longstanding tradition that stands out about the Gophers…

Johnny Campbell was the world’s first cheerleader, leading gopher fans in an organized cheer “Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah” in 1898. Fast forward to today – the Minnesota cheerleading team still upholds tradition with superior spirit.

Competing in the first-ever college Game Day competition, the D1A Coed team took home 2nd, while the All Girl team placed 4th at the championship!
