Statement of Support

A Message to Our Collegiate Spirit Family

The role of a spirit leader goes far beyond leading the crowd on game days. Building school spirit doesn’t just happen from the sidelines.

Returning to school this fall is going to look different across the country, but the primary role of a cheerleader or dancer remains the same – support the success of others and create a welcoming, spirited atmosphere for all.

Being a collegiate cheerleader or dancer is about being an ambassador, a positive light and a leader in the community, no matter the circumstances. That role is so important because now, more than ever, American Needs Spirit.

According to the Varsity Brands White Paper, students with school spirit are more likely to succeed, perform better in the classroom, and are happier in general. Spirit leaders bring a positive and uplifting environment to their peers – something we all could use right now.

Cheerleaders and dancers are the heartbeat of the university. They connect students to alums and the community. They attend alumni functions, fundraisers, pep rallies and community events—all of which can be done virtually.

Cheerleaders and dancers are key to creating a sense of belonging, inclusion and community. Through community outreach and engagement, spirit team members connect students, alums and community members to campus. They are the individuals who will keep your university connected during these uncertain times and will bring a sense of calm and familiarity to your family of students, faculty and alumni.

You can make a difference! Check out our Back to School Spirit Guide – created specifically for college programs – for ways to involve your spirit program on campus or virtually.
