Small Varsity is a highly competitive division at the 2018 National High School Cheerleading Championship. This year the competition is tough, as over 115 teams will compete for the Small Varsity title and a set of the coveted white satin jackets.
Here's How It All Breaks Down
Small Varsity will be sorted into Division l and Division ll based on school size. At the end of the weekend, a champion will be crowned from both divisions.
All Small Varsity teams will take the mat in prelims on Saturday in the hopes of advancing to the next round of the competition.
It all starts Saturday morning bright and early at 8 AM ET in Arena North. For prelims, each division will be divided into three groups — A, B, and C.
Four teams from Division l and four teams from Division ll with the highest preliminary scores will advance straight to finals on Sunday.
Only about half of the teams competing in prelims will advance to the next round of the competition. Advancing teams will move on to semifinals starting at 7 PM ET. For semifinals, the three letter groups will combine and compete against all the squads in their respective divisions.
Semifinals wraps up around 10 PM ET Saturday night and the advancing Division l and ll finalists will be announced following the last performance of the night. Around 30 teams will advance on to finals so teams must give it their all and hit solid if they want to advance.
After finalists are announced, teams will head back to their hotels to get a solid night of sleep before taking on finals Sunday evening. In 2017, Pikeville High School won back-to-back Small Varsity Div. ll titles and El Dorado won their fourth consecutive championship title in Div. l. Do you think they have what it takes to top the competitive division again or will one of the other hundred teams climb to the top?
Small Varsity is the last division of the night and the HP Field House will be packed with fans ready to find out who will take home the coveted title. The competition in finals will be fierce, so tune in at 7 PM ET to watch every routine live.
