Job Description:

  • The assistant coach will assist the head coach in developing a competitive team but more importantly, the assistant is responsible for developing student athletes to the fullest potential both as human beings and as athletes. The primary responsibility of an assistant coach is to, under the supervision of the head coach, teach their student athletes the rules, strategies, training techniques, attitudes, and skills necessary for success in his/her sport. An assistant coach should dedicate a majority of his/her time to teaching theses element of the sport.   • Western Kentucky University, a member of Conference USA and a Football Bowl Subdivision NCAA member institution, seeks to hire an individual for the position of Head Dance Coach (Topperettes). This is a 12-month, full-time position. This position will report directly to the Senior Executive Director of Sports Medicine and Student-Athlete Welfare. Applicants must have a commitment to and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of WKU, Conference USA and the NCAA.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of three years of dance coaching experience.
  • Ability to travel on nights and weekends.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the dance program, including establishing guidelines, organizing tryouts, and conducting clinics.
  • Direct and supervise dancers during practices, athletic events, and special appearances in collaboration with Marketing, Cheer, Big Red, and WKU Events.
  • Support Football, Basketball, Volleyball, and other athletic teams throughout their seasons and any post-season play.
  • Coordinate routines, competitions, and other commitments with the Big Red Marching Band.
  • Manage the budget and financial operations for all accounts related to the Topperettes.
  • Plan, organize, and execute fundraising initiatives.
  • Coordinate all details related to uniforms, performances, music, and logistics for Dance Team appearances.
  • Fulfill requests for team appearances at community functions and campus events.
  • Organize all competitive elements, including team tryouts, choreography, costumes, travel, and adherence to competition rules.
  • Communicate with sports medicine staff regarding injury procedures and physical requirements.
  • Instruct, supervise, and evaluate the performance of team members.
  • Oversee all recruiting activities, including process management, evaluation, communication, and feedback.
  • Organize summer practices in collaboration with choreographers, team leaders, and additional resources.
  • Work with facilities staff to schedule regular practices, clinics, and special events.
  • Facilitate onboarding for all new team members.
  • Oversee all social media accounts, the team website, and other promotional platforms.
  • Big Red Mascot Program:
    • Collaborate with the Co-Coordinator on all aspects of the mascot program.
    • Schedule and coordinate mascot appearances both on and off campus.
    • Manage event requests and communications.
    • Uphold the integrity and public image of Big Red.
    • Develop and implement training resources for mascot performers.
    • Oversee the care, maintenance, and inventory of mascot costumes.
