Meet Randy: Varsity All Star Fashion Guy

For Julie Williams, having a child with Down Syndrome doesn’t mean her child has a disability, it means he has different abilities. This has been a mantra for her family and also a sentiment that holds true throughout the all star community in the CheerABILITIES and DanceABILITIES divisions.

Meet Randy Williams! Randy is currently in his second year of all star cheer as a member of Infinity All Stars Supremes and is a 2020 Varsity All Star Fashion Guy. Randy got his start in cheer though his older sister, Annie. When he was younger he would attend her competitions and was immediately drawn.

“I started to notice that he would count 1-3-5-7 and started to do hand motions as to mark the routine,” said Julie. “He would attend open gym on Friday night just to be in the cheer gym!”

At the time, the Williams’s current gym didn’t have a CheerABILITIES team. “When Randy said, “Mom I really want to do cheerleading,” we made the decision to change gyms. The main reasons we picked Infinity Allstars in Jacksonville was because of their outstanding reputation and also the fact they were starting a CheerABILITIES team,” Julie said.

Since he was introduced to cheerleading through his sister, it’s only fitting that one thing that Randy loves most about all star is that it’s something he gets to do with Annie, who is a cheer buddy for the Supremes. Randy also enjoys being able to help the younger athletes on his team and getting the crowd fired up when they perform.

Randy’s coach, Kimberly Mayo, also notes Randy’s energy, strong performance factor, and fearless mentality as ways he sticks out as a veteran on the team.

“Randy has a heart of gold and loves to lead the team out at competition starting the team chant,” said Kimberly. “The sky is the limit for Randy and we are so thankful to have him as one of our leaders at Infinity.”

This season was made extra special when Randy got the call to let him know he was chosen as a 2020 Varsity All Star Fashion Guy![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

“The opportunity to be a Varsity Fashion Guy 2020 has been awesome,” said Randy. “To be the first ever Fashion Guy with Down Syndrome to be in Varsity All Star Fashion’s Practice Book and Design Book is exciting. So many people now know me from the catalog and from social media, I feel like a celebrity!”

While Randy is enjoying his time in the spotlight, his mom Julie rejoices in the fact that cheerleading has given Randy the same opportunities as all other athletes—something that the family has always strived to accomplish.

“We are beyond blessed and thankful for the opportunity that Varsity has given us and plan to use it as upcoming platform to spread the word of Varsity and inclusion,” said Julie. “Hats off to Varsity for stepping out of the box and including athletes like Randy!”

Show your support for CheerABILITIES and DanceABILITIES athletes this season! And if you’re lucky enough to see Infinity Supremes compete, make sure to watch for Randy during the tumbling and dance sections—his favorite parts to perform!
