USA Dance Nationals

About USA Dance Nationals

USA Dance Nationals began in 1986.  The event takes place in Anaheim, CA and draws teams from throughout the western United States, and farther.  Nearly 2,000 competitors and nearly 4,000 spectators are expected over this fun-filled and exciting weekend, vying for the Champion title in one of over 30 different divisions.  It is the premier event of its type in the western U.S. for the variety of styles that take the floor and the caliber of performances that are presented.

GENERAL INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION

MUSIC
Teams may use as many songs in the music portion of their routine as they like. Music rules are being followed at all USA and Varsity Brands events.  Competition music must be properly licensed and a team must be able to provide proof of licensing at any event where the music is used.  If a team cannot provide proof of licensing immediately upon request, the team may be disqualified from the event.   For further details visit varsity.com/music.

SAFETY GUIDELINE VIDEO SUBMISSION

We want you to have a penalty free performance!

Prior to USA Virtual Dance Nationals, registered teams have the option to submit videos to the USA for a comprehensive review of whether the Safety Rules have been met prior to USA Virtual Dance Nationals. It is preferable that you send a video showing each individual skill that you would like evaluated, rather than the entire routine. These submissions are solely for safety rule evaluations (i.e. skills in routines that include partnering/lifts, and/or tumbling skills, etc.). The video is not for determining qualifications for USA Virtual Dance Nationals, for assessing placement in the correct division, nor for appropriateness assessment.  Please do not submit a video if your routine does not have partnering/lifts, and/or tumbling skills involved.  Each team is responsible for reading and abiding by the comprehensive Safety Guidelines in the 2020-21 Dance Competitions brochures.

Unfortunately, penalties are not always caught during a live performance.  In light of this, because a penalty was not assessed during a previous event does not necessarily mean your routine is penalty free.  The only way to ensure a penalty free routine at USA Dance Nationals is through the safety guideline video submission process.

“Safety Rules Video” submissions are due in the USA office no later than April 7, 2021. The USA will respond officially in writing to each team’s video inquiry and we will file all videos and official responses for reference at USA Dance Nationals. All submissions must be electronic, and in the file format of either Quicktime for MAC (.mov) or MPEG-4 Format (.mp4). No other file formats will be accepted. **NEW** Please do not send videos in CD/DVD format.  Please ensure that you note for which division each lift, or skill is associated. A written request to review the video for safety rules legality must be included.

All video submissions must be emailed to mkrieger@varsity.com.

Submission of a routine does not guarantee that it can be reviewed.

Note that submission of a routine and/or its elements does not preclude a team from being assessed a penalty while at a specific USA competition, as performances from the video submission may differ from those executed on the competition floor.

USA will contact you by April 9, 2021 to inform you of the results of your “safety rules video’ review. If you do not hear from us by April 9, 2021, please call the USA office to ensure that your submission was received.

If you make changes in your routine after the video has been approved, you must send a second video following the same procedure in order to ensure that your final routine is penalty free.  Please call the USA office at 800-886-4USA before sending the second video.  For specific safety questions please call or email Melanie Krieger, Dance Program Director at 800-886-4872 or mkrieger@varsity.com.

QUALIFICATION

All teams can attend USA Virtual Dance Nationals.  Registration is OPEN until March 31st! If a team plans to compete in a qualifying division they must first qualify at a USA Dance Regional or Classic to determine if they have qualified in the Championship or Open Division. We have adjusted the requirement for Qualifying Divisions, now allowing teams to use their 2019/20 Open/Championship qualifications for the 2021 USA Dance Nationals event. The adjustment is in place for this season only.

  • Should a school decide not to use their Open/Championship qualification from the 2019/20 season or if a team did not compete during the 2019/20 season, the team may qualify for Open/Championship through one of our upcoming 2021 virtual competitions or currently scheduled live/in-person events
  • If a team competes in a non-qualifying division (Solo, Co-Ed, Dance/Drill, JV Dance, JV Hip Hop or JV Pom), there is no pre-qualification necessary in order to compete at USA Virtual Dance Nationals.
