Curriculum Highlights

Finding Your Leadership Type with Jenny Eustice

One of best ways to become a great leader is to take the strengths you possess and put them to work. Not every leader will have the same style of leadership, but learning what works for you will help you become the best version of yourself as a leader. This class will take captains through different leadership types and explain why each of them are an important to a team’s success. It will also help captains understand that they are not alone and how they can best utilize their teammates throughout the season.

Being the Connector with Melissa McGhee

Being a captain is about so much more than being a leader for your team. It is also about being a leader for your coach and knowing that you are the connection between the coach and the team. A coach takes on many different roles throughout the season and will often need to look to the captains to be the liaison. This class will help captains understand how to communicate effectively with their coach. It will give you a better understanding of what coaches need from great leaders and how you can best make a difference for your coach.

Taking Control of our Leadership Mindset with Dr. Chelsea Pierotti

Our sport can be hard on self-esteem and a dancer’s mindset. When coaches, parents and peers focus on the physical image of a dancer, or the inability to hit a skill, or a lack of competitive success, it is devastating to an athlete’s self-esteem. We have a lot of power as captains to influence our team’s mindset, both positively and negatively. As their captain, everything you say becomes their inner voice. This class will help captains learn how to take control of their own practice mindset and help influence the rest of the team.

Ongoing Support and Development with UDA Staff

Best of all, the education, development of leadership skills, and support from UDA Staff doesn’t stop at the end of your seminar on August 27th. Leadership Summit attendees will continue to receive support from UDA Staff through the fall of 2022 with monthly meetings hosted by their UDA Leader. These meetings will bring Leadership Summit participants together and will serve as a check-in to monitor their leadership journey and follow up with anything they may need assistance with. Meetings will kick off with a monthly activity designed to build upon the skills they learned during the main seminar (August 27th) and to apply these skills to real life scenarios in their dance and educational journeys.
