Do you and your best friend share everything—except cheerleading? Does she hear you talk about “cheer stuff” all the time and wonder what all the hype is about? Introduce her to the excitement by inviting her to tryouts this year. Maybe you can even bring several friends along and show them what cheerleading is all about!
You’re already an experienced cheerleader and know what makes it so great, so bring the fun to your friend’s life by sharing your love of cheerleading with them. Not only will you introduce your friend to something new, but having her join the team could make your squad the best it’s ever been!
If your friend is hesitant, give her these five reasons why it’s so great to be a cheerleader!
1. Being a part of a group full of leaders – Cheerleaders are some of the highest achievers in their schools. Statistics show that almost every cheerleader in high school plans on attending college, and 90% of them are Honor Roll students. Cheerleading also offers the chance to be involved on campus and in your community. A cheerleader knows what commitment takes—so many of them participate in school activities, honor societies and community service.
2. Going to summer camp – There is nothing more fun than going to a summer camp with a large group of friends, and that’s what cheerleading squads do each year. Varsity hosts 350,000 cheerleaders each summer at camp locations across the country. Camp is more than just learning the basics – it’s a chance for a team to bond, learn how to build team and school spirit, get to know cheerleaders from other schools, and learn how to become a true leader and role model. Camps can be held away from home or right in your own school and some are even near amusement parks, beaches, and other unique places. No matter what camp your cheerleading team decides to go to – this will be where your best high school memories are made!
3. Being a positive influence in school – If you are a cheerleader, you will be recognized. Whether it’s by teachers, students, faculty and staff, or a little bit of each—cheerleaders stand out. They are known for their positive energy and cheerfulness and are often called upon by school administrators to promote big events to the student body. As a cheerleader, you will never get lost in the crowd – you will be too busy pumping it up!
4. Learning new skills and staying in shape – Cheerleaders have to stay fit. The activity demands staying in top condition and practices include skill training, conditioning, and dance segments. You will build endurance by cardio workouts and performing routines, and you will develop muscle mass by lifting a fellow cheerleader in the air as a base or strengthening your core as a top girl. As a cheerleader, you will learn how to maintain your body and stay healthy.

5. Making new friends – True friends are forever and true friendship is what you will develop by being on a cheerleading squad. Today’s cheerleaders do not fit the clichéd Hollywood stereotype of a girl that gets popular by being pretty. Most cheerleaders are involved in more than cheerleading, which give them the opportunity to make friends with student body leaders, athletes from other sports, and other students. Cheerleaders today also spend a lot of time together at practice, competition, community activities, and school events. Squads build strong friendships and develop a bond with each other that can’t be broken.
